Fitness Forum Changing Lives For More Than 30 Years

Thirty-three years of success in any industry is much reason to celebrate, but thriving during more than three decades in the fitness industry is a monumental achievement.

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2015, Fitness Forum opened the doors to its 39,000-square-foot facility on Southdale Road in August 1985. Owners Alec and Lynne Pinchin have deftly incorporated aspects of traditional racquet clubs, aerobic studios and gyms within the walls of their recognizable White Oaks neighbourhood club.

State-of-the-art fitness studios, cardio and fitness centres, an indoor pool, squash and racquetball courts, a banked and rubberized three-lane indoor running track, and free weight room are accompanied by individual and small-group training, a computerized fitness assessment program, plus a physiotherapy clinic – just to name a few of Fitness Forum’s offerings.

“We definitely saw a need for a club like ours,” said Alec. “I had spent the better part of a year researching the industry before I jumped into it. I was studying the industry in the U.S., and it just grew on me.”

The fitness club industry itself has grown exponentially over the past three decades. World-wide statistics combined at state that the fitness club industry in North America alone is a $24.4-billion business. That same statistical report said, more than 90 per cent of health club members that are at least 66 years of age say that they train at a fitness club because they “need to stay healthy.” Helping those clients achieve their goals, according to Alec, is an ever-changing responsibility.

“You can never quit evolving. You need to stay ahead of the curve at all times,” Alec said. He points to today’s wearable technology to monitor and record biometric data as a fitness game-changer. “It has opened up a lot of eyes,” said Alec of wearable tracking devices including Apple iWatch, Fitbit and Jawbone. “This helps with the whole awareness movement involving the benefits of fitness. You’re able to get instant feedback, and see how you can make improvements. In the end, it’s been a big boost for our industry.”

Over the years, Fitness Forum has earned the recognition of Top Fitness Club in Canada, and one of the Top 5 Clubs in North America, by the Gallup Organization and IHRSA (International Health and Racquet Sports Association). But accolades aren’t as sweet if they aren’t accompanied by giving back to your community.

“Fitness Forum has always had a strong affiliation with the local athletic scene,” Alec explained. “Besides sponsoring numerous minor sports teams, over the years we have been the Official Fitness Centre of numerous teams including the London Knights and London Nationals hockey clubs, London Beefeaters Football Club and many more.

“We’re also proud to have supported numerous charities, including: Terry Fox Foundation, Thames Valley Children’s Centre, ALS, Jessey’s Journey, Cystic Fibrosis, Canadian Cancer, Children’s Hospital, Brain Tumor Foundation, Canadian Diabetes, Canadian Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, Kidney Foundation, Sunshine Foundation, Run for Retina, Make-a Wish Foundation and The Alzheimer Society,” Alec added.

As Fitness Forum enters a new era, it does so embracing one of the continual hot trends in fitness: assisting members in enlisting the services of educated, certified and experienced fitness professionals. Concurrently, the three hottest fitness trends, according to research from the American College of Sports Medicine, are: high-intensity interval training; body weight training; and strength training.

“We have members from young teenagers to people in their 80s,” said Alec. “Our menu is extensive, and our strength is diversity.”

It’s a game plan which has served Fitness Forum well for more than 30 years.
