London Angler Catches Big Muskie In Thames

London angler Matt Elias caught a 100 cm, 8.6 kg muskie in the Thames River, upstream from the broken Springbank Dam, on Labour Day weekend.

With help from his brother, Isaac, and friend, Danny Breuninger, Elias brought the fish to land before releasing it.

Rob Huber, president of the Thames River Anglers’ Association, said anglers have been catching large fish of this type – but not this big – since the dam has been left without further repairs.

City Hall is currently collecting public input on the fate of the dam, with public meetings planned for October.

With news of species flourishing without an operating dam, but with canoeists and paddlers wanting the dam fixed for the first time since 2008, there are opposite viewpoints in regards to the dam’s future.

A botched $6.8-million repair to the dam after 2006 flooding caused damage has left the Thames flowing freely in adjacent to Springbank Park.
