The London Cricket League (LCL) began its fifth season this past Saturday with a full day of action at North London Athletic Fields. And if opening day was any indication, 2025 promises to be the league’s most competitive and celebrated year yet.
With 15 teams divided between the Elite and Premier Divisions, LCL is set to host over 110 matches from May to September – making it the largest and most dynamic cricket league in the region. From its humble beginnings in 2019 with just five founding clubs, the league has matured into a homegrown success story, attracting talent from all backgrounds and establishing London as a rising hub for Canadian cricket.
“We saw a gap, and we filled it,” said board member Adrian during the league’s opening address. “Before LCL, many of us were commuting hours every weekend to play in out-of-town leagues. We wanted to build something local, accessible and competitive. And now, five years later, we’ve created a platform where players and fans can enjoy quality cricket right here in our city.”
The ceremonial launch drew an impressive crowd of athletes, families and guests, including MPP Terence Kernaghan, City of London councillors Susan Stevenson and Sam Trosow, and Olympic athletes Alexander Kopacz and Miranda Ayim. The guests not only offered words of encouragement but took part in a fun cricket demonstration – swinging bats, trying bowling and joining in the celebration of sport.
“What’s been achieved here in five years is phenomenal,” said Kernaghan. “This league has grown not just in size, but also in its impact. It’s become a symbol of community spirit, talent, and diversity in London.”
“Behind every match, there are volunteers, coaches, families (and) all of that unseen effort deserves applause,” added Stevenson, praising the organizers for bringing such a dynamic league to life.
“This park and this league represent the best of what Ward 6 has to offer,” said Trosow. “It’s about more than recreation. It’s about building community.”
LCL’s growth has been matched by strong support from sponsors who allow the league to offer high-quality programming, facilities and officiating, making it a truly organized amateur league and respected across Southern Ontario.
The opening match of the season saw London Sports Club take on LCC Mavericks in a 30-over contest. Despite a strong showing from both sides, London Sports Club secured a convincing 41-run victory, with Samuel Dsouza earning player of the match honours.
With a full slate of fixtures ahead, the league’s Elite and Premier divisions promise fierce competition. Under the promotion-relegation system, teams in the Premier Division will have the chance to rise to the Elite Division next season based on their performance, creating high-stakes cricket every weekend.
“We’ve seen teams train hard this pre-season,” said LCL Board member Manoj. “There’s real talent here. From all-rounders to power-hitters and swing bowlers, we expect this to be our toughest and most exciting season yet.”
