One of North America’s oldest lawn bowling clubs has received a facelift, thanks to a $70,500 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant.
Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club (est. 1911) at 17 1/2 Edward Street in Wortley Village now has new entrance pavement, outdoor lighting and floodlights, as well as improved washrooms and fresh paint, thanks to the grant. They’re all welcomed additions to the historic club which houses two 100 ft. x 120 ft. bowling greens adjacent to the cozy clubhouse.
Club officials say the new lighting will help membership grow, thanks to expanded bowling hours.
In fact, 40 new members have already joined this season.
Elmwood hosts two monthly tournaments, and offers learn-to-bowl sessions every Monday evening. Cost is $20.
Membership fees are $200 per year, or $180/year for learn-to-bowl.
More information is available at elmwoodlawnbowlingclub.com.
The oldest club in North America, FYI, is 1877-founded Niagara-on-the-Lake Lawn Bowling Club.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport has experienced much growth, thanks to its offering of safe outdoor fun, fitness, expanded hours and improved facilities like Elmwood’s improvements.
