A combined $3.5 million in municipal and federal government cash will turn Earl Nichols Recreation Centre in south London a whole lot greener.
With $2.3 million coming from Ottawa, the 40-year-old rink on Homeview Road will get a new refrigeration plant with a heat pump and thermal battery storage.
Today’s announcement said the build’s carbon emissions will be reduced by an estimated 246 tonnes while energy consumption will drop by 42 per cent.
The City’s Kinsmen Arena was awarded $2.1 million through a similar federal program two years ago.
According to City of London Mayor Josh Morgan, “The most exciting part is now we get to actually build this and improve this facility, which will be more energy efficient, will be a better experience for everybody who uses it, and continue to be an important asset in our community.”
The City estimates more than 240,000 visit Earl Nichols for hockey and figure skating each year.
