The Eager Beaver Baseball Association (est. 1955), London’s original minor sports association, has cancelled its 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

EBBA released this statement today:

It is with great disappointment and heavy hearts that we have to announce the cancellation of the 2020 EBBA season. Your board has long held the hope that there would be a way to run a modified season, but unfortunately the following factors have made that option impossible.
Baseball Ontario has suspended all in-person baseball activities until June 15. Since EBBA is insured through Baseball Ontario, it is not possible to have insurance coverage until Baseball Ontario allows in-person baseball activities to resume.
The provincial government has not given a date for team sports to resume, however, it will not be before June 9 and with the recent rise in the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases it does not appear that the province will be lifting the ban at that point.
The City of London has already notified us that once the go-ahead is given from the province, it will take at least two weeks before the city will be able to issue permits for any locations. Organized teams cannot use fields or diamonds without city permits.
The city has also informed us that they will not have staff available for weekend support, which means that diamonds will not be dragged and made playable on the weekends. If and when a date to begin team sports arrives and the city issues permits, the time necessary to contact all players, offer the option of a full refund or participating in the season, and then put together a season that will not include weekend play, is just not feasible.
All registration fees paid this year will be refunded in full.
The board of EBBA would like to thank you for your continued support and patience during this time. If an opportunity to run a short fall season materializes, we will send out an email with all registration information. Right now we still plan to be running the indoor clinics starting in January.
We hope to see everyone back on the diamonds in 2021.
Sincerely, EBBA Board of Directors

The cancellation of what was to be EBBA’s 66th season follows the cancellation of another local sports association’s 2020 season: the Junior Tyson Tour, founded in 1968 and Canada’s longest-running junior golf tour. Click here to read that story.

Londoner Gordon Berryhill, a friend of both Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, founded EBBA with assistance from a strong local group of baseball supporters, including the association’s founding president, former Major League ballplayer Frank Coleman.

EBBA is one of Canada’s first organized minor sports groups.
