Canada captured two medals, including gold in the men’s double sculls, as the 2026 FISU World University Championship Rowing wrapped up Saturday at Fanshawe Lake.

Charles-Etienne Tabet (Brock / Boucherville, Que.) and Keithan Woodhouse (Brock / Fonthill, Ont.) delivered Canada’s lone title of the day, winning the men’s double sculls in six minutes 38.56 seconds.

The Canadian duo led from start to finish, reaching the 500-metre mark in 1:35.45 and holding first place through 1,000 and 1,500 metres. They finished 2.12 seconds ahead of the United States, which took silver in 6:40.68, while Germany earned bronze in 6:42.83.

Canada’s other medal came in the men’s four, where Oliver Baker (Western / Kentville, N.S.), Simon Whittaker (Victoria / Toronto, Ont.), Gabe Dyer (Victoria / Cambridge, Ont.) and Aidan Hembruff (Western / Ottawa, Ont.) took bronze in 6:11.32.

The Canadians sat third at each of the 500-metre splits and held their position to the finish. Italy won gold in 6:04.98, with Great Britain taking silver in 6:05.78.

Canada came close to the podium in four other events.

Gabby Yarema (UBC / Calgary, Alta.) finished fourth in the women’s single sculls in 7:53.99. Yarema was second after 500 metres and moved into the lead at the halfway point before crossing 1,500 metres in third.

Jana Peachey (Michigan / Halifax, N.S.) and Cait Whittard (Washington / St. Catharines, Ont.) also placed fourth in the women’s pair, finishing in 7:28.84.

Canada was fourth in both eight finals.

The men’s eight of Maijken Meindertsma (UBC / Yarrow, B.C.), Bennett Maijer (UBC / Vancouver, B.C.), Giancarlo DiPompeo (Victoria / Thorold, Ont.), Thomas Boruta (Victoria / Canmore, Alta.), Adrian Breen (UBC / Mississauga, Ont.), Ben Buchheit (UBC / Somerville, Mass.), Kyland Mels-Williams (Western / London, Ont.), Robert Walsh (UBC / Halifax, N.S.) and coxswain Oscar Wostenholme (UBC / Great Neck, N.Y.) crossed the line in 5:46.14.

Italy won the men’s eight in 5:40.75, followed by Great Britain in 5:44.33 and the Netherlands in 5:45.90.

In the women’s eight, coxswain Jack Pankratz (Carleton / Beijing, China), Ceilidh Aho (Guelph / Newmarket, Ont.), Willow Cherewaty (UBC / Mansfield, Ont.), Kaija Erickson (Queen’s / Thunder Bay, Ont.), Tess Friar (Trent / Roslin, Ont.), Kristina Harris (Brock / Guelph, Ont.), Anna King (Ohio State / Ottawa, Ont.), Kate Kulig (Southern Methodist / Kelowna, B.C.) and Kira Mels-Williams (Western / London, Ont.) finished fourth in 6:33.99.

Great Britain took the women’s eight title in 6:24.76, the Netherlands was second in 6:29.15 and Italy third in 6:30.13.

Oliver Page-Kuhr (UBC / Seattle, Wash.) finished third in the men’s single sculls B final in 7:17.67, giving him ninth place overall.

Canada also had two other crews competing in B finals. Maria “Marese” Fletcher (McGill / Vancouver, B.C.) and Julia Teixeira (Queen’s / Toronto, Ont.) placed fourth in the women’s double sculls B final in 7:29.77 to finish 10th overall.

Claire Hallett (UBC / Victoria, B.C.), Danielle Hart (Western / London, Ont.), Roksolana Nazar (Toronto / Toronto, Ont.) and Natasha Witts (UBC / Vancouver, B.C.) were fourth in the women’s four B final in 7:18.59, also finishing 10th overall.

Saturday marked the third and final day of the championship, the first edition of the FISU World University Championship Rowing to be held in Canada.
