Western Announces Purple Blanket Recipients

From the Western Mustangs:

Today we recognize the amazing athletes being awarded a Purple Blanket as a part of our Mustangs Season of Celebration!

Western’s prestigious Purple Blankets are presented annually to the student athletes who, in the opinion of the Selection Committee, achieved superior distinction at the Provincial/National level of competition as representatives of Western.

This year’s Purple Blanket recipient’s are:

Ramzi Abdulahi (Track & Field): Ramzi is a decorated Track & Field athlete that is most known for his recurring gold medals in the men’s 300m race.

April Clark (Hockey): As the 2019 Female Athlete of the Year, 2020 recipient of the F.W.P Jones Trophy, and captain of the Mustangs women’s hockey team, April has been frequently named both a 1st Team All-Canadian and a 2nd Team OUA All-Star numerous times. She was also named the OUA Player and Forward of the Year in her 2018-19 season.

Ryan Clegg (Rowing): Ryan was a nominee for the 2020 Dr. Claude Brown Memorial Trophy and has represented his team at the national level when he was named to the Team Canada roster for the World University Rowing Championship in 2018.

Julia Curran (Basketball): Julia is a decorated athlete and a strong representative for the women’s basketball team. From OUA Rookie of the Year to All Star, Academic All-Canadian to recipient of the 2019-20 Joy Bellinger Award, she has had over a 1,000 point university career. This year she was also named the winner of the Sylvia Sweeney Award which recognizes a student-athlete for excellence on the court, in the classroom, and for their community involvement.

Yara Ensminger (Rowing): Yara is a strong member of the women’s rowing team and was named both a Graduating Ring Recipient as well as the 2020 Most Valuable Player for her efforts.

Bleska Kambamba (Football): Bleska was named a 2020 Graduating Ring Recipient and has been instrumental in the success of the Mustangs football team over the last five years.

Marc Liegghio (Football): Marc is a decorated member of the football team, having been named OUA Special Teams Player of the Week as well as Mustangs Athlete of the Week numerous times throughout his career. This year Marc’s opening field goal pushed him past former Mustang Lirim Hajrullahu as the Mustangs all-time leading point scorer with 425.

Matthew Loewen (Swimming): Matthew is a Graduating Ring Recipient, a gold medal winner in the men’s 50m breaststroke, and a competitor in the 100m breaststroke and 4×100 Medley Relay.

Denis Margalik (Figure Skating): Both a coach and a skater, Denis is a 2020 Mustangs Graduating Ring Recipient, has placed 1st in the OUA Championship Open Men’s Freeskate four consecutive years, and been named an OUA All-Star.

Chris Merchant (Football): Chris is a decorated member of the Mustangs football team and has led them through three consecutive undefeated seasons. He was named the 2020 Most Valuable Player for the team, as well as the recipient of the annual Hec Crighton Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player in U SPORTS. Merchant was also named the 2020 league MVP and has signed to play football for the Wasa Royals.

David Mill (Squash): David has been instrumental in leading the men’s squash team to their last four consecutive championship banners. David has been named a Mustangs Athlete of the Week, an OUA All-Star, and the tournament OUA MVP.

Madison Parks (Wrestling): Madison is a recurring gold medalist in her weight division (51kg), has been awarded the OUA Outstanding Female Wrestler Award and was named the women’s team Most Valuable Player.

Cody Ward (Lacrosse): Cody Ward is a 2020 Graduating Ring Recipient as well as the men’s lacrosse team Most Valuable Player for the 2019-20 season.
