Mustangs Win 10th Consecutive Ontario Softball Championship

Sunday at Hamilton, the Western Mustangs women’s softball team captured its 10th-straight Ontario Intercollegiate Women’s Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) championship.

After beating Ryerson 11-4 and Brock 1-0 on Saturday, the Mustangs beat Ottawa 7-1 in the championship final.

Western had defeated that same Ottawa team, 5-1, on Sunday morning, but Ottawa emerged the winner in the loser’s bracket, earning a right to meet Western in the final.

Catcher/infielder Megan Parno repeated as tournament MVP. Outfielder Emma Murray and pitcher Aimee Leduc were named tournament all-stars, while Leduc was named top pitcher.

Kitchener hosts the Canadian championship tournament Oct. 11-14. The Mustangs have won five national titles, beginning in 2011.

Western’s pool includes Calgary, Saskatchewan and Durham College, while the Fanshawe Falcons will face host Laurier, Brock and Regina.
