Men Win 42nd-Straight OUA Title, Women Win Back-To-Back Championships

The Western Mustangs men’s squash dynasty remains alive after a 42nd straight OUA championship this past weekend.

Western capped off another dominant season on Sunday at the McMaster University-hosted tournament as they defeated the University of Toronto 7-0 in the gold medal final.

The Mustangs controlled the tournament from the opening matches, finishing atop the standings with a perfect 5-0 record while compiling a remarkable 34-1 individual match record. Western also posted a commanding 103-9 advantage in games and outscored opponents 1,208-605.

Mustangs head coach Chris Hanebury said, “I think our depth really helped. Being able to sit our top guys one match each so they were fresh for the finals was a big difference.”

Western veteran Antonio Mendes said with a dynasty lasting more than four decades, “Every year we come out here, obviously, we have a lot of pressure on our backs … but I think the guys really live up to it every year.”

Western’s Daniel Deverill was named an OUA All-Star.

Western Women Win Again

The Mustangs women’s squash team won a second consecutive OUA Championship, marking the 16th time they’ve done so in program history. They completed a dominant weekend, defeating Queen’s University 6-1 in the gold medal match and finishing the tournament undefeated.

The Mustangs paced the field with 28 individual match victories, an 87-19 games record and an impressive 1,113-590 points differential. Straight-game victories from Western’s Caitlin Ng, Katie Boulanger and Sophie Pinfold helped swing momentum, while Sienna Grossi secured the championship point with a four-game win.

Head coach Tom Panabaker said, “The girls do all the hard work. They plan, work all year and train hard.”

Western rookie Caitlin Ng was named Rookie of the Year after a flawless 5-0 weekend, while Ashley Hall was named an OUA All-Star.

This marks the second year in a row that the Mustangs men’s and women’s teams both won their OUA championships.
