McKibbon feels the move to Western is a homecoming of sorts as he was born and raised in Hamilton.

“After a national search, the hiring committee is pleased to welcome Nate McKibbon as our Mustang women’s basketball coach,” said Christine Stapleton, Mustangs Director of Sports and Recreation Services. “Mustangs sports are an important part of Western’s Student Experience and building a thriving campus for our students.  We look forward to Nate’s leadership of our women’s basketball team and his engagement with our campus community.

On top of his university basketball experience, McKibbon is also involved with Canada Basketball as an assistant coach with the Cadette national team. He is also the current head coach of the Kia Nurse Elite U16 team, which plays in the Elite Youth Basketball League.

“My plans in the short term are to focus on player development for the athletes already involved in the program, to build relationships with some of the top recruits across Canada and to connect with the greater basketball community in London,” said McKibbon.

McKibbon will begin his role with the Mustangs July 15 in preparation of the 2019-20 season which begins October 23 at Windsor.

From Mount Royal Cougars:

Calgary, AB – Women’s basketball Head Coach Nate McKibbon has resigned from his position at Mount Royal University.

McKibbon has been at Mount Royal for four seasons after being an assistant coach at McMaster University in the 2014-15 season. He replaced Len Harvey in 2015 and brought passion and dedication to the program. A native of Hamilton, Ontario, he has a wide range of coaching experience from high school to the national team. He just finished as the assistant coach for Team Canada in the FIBA U16 Women’s 2019 Americas Championship.

McKibbon brought a unique perspective to the head coaching position as he has served in a number of different roles throughout his career. Nate has been a head coach, assistant coach, player development coordinator, performance analyst and a technical director.

“On behalf of everyone in Cougars Athletics & Recreation, we thank Nate for his time and efforts the last 4 seasons.” said Manager of Varsity Athletics, Rob Godfrey. “We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

The team has been building since McKibbon took over and has brought in some exciting new recruits. This young team has shown steady improvements and will look to continue this trend to take the next step in a competitive Canada West conference.

A national search will begin immediately for the head coaching position.
