Cards take Game 1 vs. Majors

HAMILTON – The Hamilton Cardinals opened their series with a 13-3 win over the London Majors Thursday night at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.
Jake Chiaravalle went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, while Jon Dziomba and Connor Bowie each drove in three. Bowie’s RBIs came on a three-run home run in the sixth inning.
Chris Beer went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, Grant Arnold singled, doubled and drove in two, Jake Foden had an RBI and a run, Laine Renaud drove in a run and scored twice, and Joel Brophy had three hits and three runs.
Chris Lazar (1-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over eight innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
For London, Michael Ambrose had two hits, an RBI and a run, Evan Britt drove in a run, and Carlos Arteaga had two hits and a run.
Starlin Peralta (0-1) took the loss, giving up eight runs (five earned) on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 5.1 innings.

Leafs hit three home runs in win over Royals

TORONTO – Justin Marra, Garret Takamatsu and Zac Orchard all went deep as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Guelph Royals 9-6 in Game 1 Thursday night at Christie Pits.
Orchard finished with three hits, two RBI and two runs, and Takamatsu went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Dan Marra had two hits, an RBI and a run.
Justin Cicatello (1-0) went six innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Dustin Richardson struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
Ethan Mohan had two home runs and three RBI for Guelph. Justin Interisano homered and drove in two, Sean Reilly singled and scored twice, and Jon Waltenbury had two hits and an RBI.
Yunior Yambatis (0-1) went 6.2 innings and allowed nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Baycats open title defence with win

BARRIE – The Barrie Baycats opened defence of their IBL title with an 8-0 win over the Burlington Herd Thursday night at Coates Stadium.
Ryan Spataro went 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Starlin Rodriguez singled twice and scored once, Jordan Castaldo had three hits and a run, Kevin Atkinson, Kyle DeGrace and Tim Smith each drove in a run, and Jeff Cowan had an RBI and two runs. Glenn Jackson singled, doubled and had two RBI.
Frank Garces (1-0) went the distance, scattering four hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts.
Nolan Pettipiece had two of four hits for Burlington.
Chris Boatto (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits over 5.2 innings. He walked four and struck out three.

Entenza leads Panthers past Red Sox

BRANTFORD – Noelvis Entenza threw seven scoreless innings to lead the Kitchener Panthers to a 4-0 win over the Brantford Red Sox Thursday night at Arnold Anderson Stadium.
Entenza (1-0) scattered three hits while walking three and striking out five.
Offensively, Brian Burton hit a solo home run. Mike Andrulis had two hits and two RBI, and Mike Gordner drove in a run.
David Mendham had two of Brantford’s three hits.
Euclides Leyer (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits over seven innings. He walked
four and struck out six.
