At Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford Wednesday night, the London Majors ran their unbeaten string to seven games with a 4-1 win over the Red Sox. The Majors are atop the Intercounty Baseball League standings with a perfect 7-0 record.
London starting LHP Luis Pina remains perfect, too, upping his record to 3-0. Over 6.1 innings he allowed one run on three hits, with three strikeouts and one walk. In middle relief, RHP Mitch Lumley allowed no hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 1.2 innings. RHP Jon Fitzsimmons saw action for the second time this year after rejoining the club. He shut the door with one strikeout in the 9th inning and earned his first save.
Two Brantford errors and three unearned runs opened the door for the Majors, who continue to find different ways to win. It was a great start to what promised to be a tough week, with Brantford in London Friday night for a rematch, and a twin bill Sunday in Barrie.
RHP Nathan Forer (0-1) took the loss, going five innings and giving up three runs (none earned) while walking two and striking out one. The Red Sox fell to 2-3.
Majors first baseman Cleveland Brownlee continues to swing a hot bat. Batting in the No. 3 slot, he went 2-for-5, collecting a single, double, one RBI and one run scored. Brownlee is batting .414 on the season.
London DH Sean Refflinghaus added a two-run single in the 6th inning to break a 1-1 tie. He’s batting .462.
Centre fielder Terrell Alliman had two of the Red Sox’ four hits, and third baseman Jeff Hunt drove in Brantford’s only run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning after second baseman/shortstop Benjamin Bostick led off with a triple.
These two teams go at it again Friday at Labatt Park at 7:35 p.m. The Majors then visit the Baycats for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
The Majors then travel to Kitchener June 4 before hosting the Panthers June 5 on Salvation Army Day at Labatt Park.
Baycats win fourth straight
TORONTO – In Toronto, the Barrie Baycats beat the Maple Leafs 9-5 for their fourth straight win.
Daryl Pui and Tyler Fata each had a pair of hits, an RBI and run for the Baycats, who had 10 hits but took advantage of six Leaf errors.
Barrie (5-1) spread its offence around, as different batters scored at least one run, and eight different batters collected a hit. On the mound, Brett Lawson (3-0) allowed five runs on 10 hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out one. For Toronto (3-3), Jon Waltenbury, Raul Borjas and Will Richards had six of the Leafs’ 11 hits.
Richards had a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning. Centre-fielder Tyler Mitchell stroked a two-run double in the fourth, which tied the game 4-4 at the time. Cam Gray (0-1) took the loss in one inning of relief. Only three of the runs allowed by five Leafs pitchers were earned.
