River Lions Leave NBL Canada, Join New Loop

The Niagara River Lions have bolted from the National Basketball League of Canada, and will play in the newly-formed Canadian Elite Basketball League, founded by the club’s CEO, Richard Petko. The new loop begins play in May 2019.

Here’s the statement from NBL Canada Deputy Commissioner Audley Stephenson:

“On behalf of the National Basketball League of Canada and the board of governors, I wish to thank the Niagara River Lions organization for their participation in our league for the last three seasons. Despite the fact that the River Lions forfeited their rights to play in that market to join another league, the Niagara/St. Catherines area continues to be an important market to the league and it is the intention of NBL Canada to have new ownership in place for the 2018-19 season. Thank you as always for your ongoing support.”
