Knights Defeat Spirit 7-1

MitchMarnerThe London Knights picked up their 30th win of the season with a 7-1 drubbing of the Saginaw Spirit at Budweiser Gardens on Friday night.

The Knights are still the highest scoring team in the OHL, but they had to endure a fourth straight scoreless period to begin the game.  The Spirit managed to kill off two London power plays and Saginaw goalie, Evan Cormier absolutely robbed Aaron Berisha of the Knights on a point blank chance to the left of the Spirit.

Berisha got another chance just over six and a half minutes into the second period and the former Belleville Bull buried it to put London ahead 1-0.

Berisha got his second of the game at 10:12 as he knocked in the rebound of a Dvorak shot.  The Dvorak got a goal of his own, his 30th of the season, just sixteen seconds later and in a span of just over four minutes, they had their offence revved and running.

Max Jones made it 4-0 at 15:42 of the period as he out-powered everyone down left wing and snapped a puck through Cormier.

The Knights held the Spirit to 13 shots through 40 minutes.

Former Kitchener Ranger, Mike Davies broke the Saginaw goose-egg in the third period, banging in his own rebound to make it 4-1.

Jones got that back with his second of the game and it was 5-1 Knights.  Jones nearly completed his third hat trick of the season as he got behind the Spirit defence only to be denied by Cormier’s glove.

Dvorak became the third London player to score a second goal in the game at 9:23 as he cut across the slot and scored and it was 6-1 London.

Rookie Nicolas Mattinen put a seeing-eye shot through at least one pair of legs and off Mitch Marner to extend the Knights’ lead to 7-1.

Berisha, Dvorak and Daniel Bernhardt each had three points to lead the way offensively.

Brendan Burke made 26 saves for his 6th win as a Knight.

London will host Alexander Nylander and the Mississauga Steelheads tonight (Saturday) at 7:00 at Budweiser Gardens.  Broadcast time on NewsTalk 1290 is 6:30 p.m.
