Gold For London’s Newman

London’s Alysha Newman didn’t only win Commonwealth Games gold in women’s pole vaulting. She crushed the previous Games mark today by clearing 4.75 metres on her final attempt.

At Gold Coast, Australia, Newman, 23, erased a 12-year-old Games record of 4.62 metres. It’s her first gold medal at international competition. In 2014, Newman finished fourth at Glasgow, Scotland.

Today’s silver medal went to New Zealand’s Eliza McCartney, who cleared 4.70 metres, with bronze awarded to Australia’s Nina Kennedy with 4.65 metres.
