Local golf fans will have another player to cheer for on the big tours next season.
London’s Maddie Szeryk has earned her LPGA Tour card for the 2022 campaign. She’s the first London golfer to earn full status on the LPGA Tour.
Szeryk, 25, a dual citizen living in Allen, Tx. fired a 4-under 68 in the eighth and final round of the LPGA Q-Series on Sunday in Mobile, Ala. She moved to T35 with a score of 5-under-par – the top 45 and ties earned LPGA Tour cards (scores of 4 under and better earning LPGA Tour status in 2022).
Szeryk’s scorecard read 68-71-72-74 during the first week of Q-School, then 73-72-71-68 during Week 2. Her gutsy performance yesterday sees her on the big tour with full status in 2022 alongside Canada’s Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont. and Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que.
Selena Costabile of Thornhill, Ont., finished 68th, and LPGA Tour veteran Alena Sharp of Hamilton finished 69th.
For Szeryk, it was an amazing finish after a disappointing third season on the Symetra Tour. This season, she finished with $7,795 US in earnings, good for 96th spot. She finished T55 at the Tour Championship. On the season, the Golf Canada Young Pro Squad member finished a respectable 39th in greens in regulation, but 127th in sand saves and 132nd in putting average. She missed the cut at 11 of 18 tournaments.
The Texas A&M All-American has amassed $74,339 US in career earnings on the Symetra Tour. During a COVID-19-shortened 2020 sophomore season, she made the cut at seven of 10 events, and finished 48th overall. As a rookie, Szeryk made the cut at 12 of 20 tournaments and finished 19th overall with $57,983 US in earnings thanks to four top-10 finishes and a runner-up finish at the Zimmer Biomet Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez.
