10-Minute Survey Will Help Define Local Golfers and their Spending Habits

January 7, 2020 (London, ONT) – Today, LondonOntarioGolf.com (est. 2004) announces the launch of the 2020 London & Area Golf Survey – link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GLYL5KK.

The aim of this 10-minute survey, featuring 54 questions, is to help in further defining local golfers. Open to all golfers in London and nine surrounding counties, the survey runs now until Sept. 30, 2020.

“There are more golf courses, per capita, in London and area than anywhere else in North America,” said LondonOntarioGolf.com Publisher and Editor Jeffrey Reed. “London is one of Canada’s golf capitals, given our participation rate, our number of courses, the quality of our links and the notable amateur and professional tournaments we have hosted over the past century.”

In London and surrounding counties, local golfers have access to 13 private golf clubs, 123 semi-private and public clubs, 20 stand-alone outdoor golf practice centres, numerous golf ranges housed at local clubs plus a growing number of indoor golf simulators and practice centres.

“Previous studies have shown that most local golfers are avid golfers, as opposed to casual golfers. Yet in most other communities, the reverse is true,” Reed said. “The golf industry is a major contributor to the local economy. And, it helps define who we are in Southwestern Ontario.”

The 2020 London & Area Golf Survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/GLYL5KK includes questions about why and how often we golf, what determines where we golf, and how much money we spend on the game each year – including green fees and memberships, equipment, apparel and accessories.

Golfers are also asked what problems – including slow play – are detriments to growing the game; what local clubs must do to improve amenities; and what golfers plan to do to improve their handicap index.

A 1991 City of London study, conducted by Canadian Golf Marketing, stated there were 81,000 golfers in London, 29,000 of whom were recreational golfers, and the balance avid golfers. That study reported, in most other municipalities, those numbers were reversed. The 1991 study indicated, more than 1,250,000 rounds of golf were played each year at 20 London and area courses.

Mike Olizarevitch, retired long-time head professional at Fanshawe Golf Club, produced a report for the City in 2003 indicating, there are enough golf courses in and around London to support a population of 1,050,000 – more than three times London’s then population of about 330,000.

“The 2020 London & Area Golf Survey will be shared with local golf course owners and retailers, local golfers and anyone wishing to learn more about our playing habits, our spending habits and our view of how the game can be improved for all demographics,” said Reed, a member of the Golf Journalists Association of Canada.

“Londoners love golf – even in January when we count down the days until local courses again open their doors. Traffic at our website attests to this fact, too. So now is a perfect time to ask the local golf community to spend 10 minutes completing the survey as we further define our golf community,” Reed added.
