Mustangs’ Men Third At Guelph U.-Hosted Tournament

London’s Liam McKeiver (Highland CC) of the Brock Badgers captured the Ontario university Fall Opener yesterday at Guelph Lakes Golf Club.
McKeiver shot a 3-under 68 at the 6,391-yard Guelph club which was good enough for a one-stroke victory over his teammate Jaxon Kearns. A former Junior Tyson Tour champion, McKeiver is the son of PGA of Canada pro Katy McKeiver.
Two Western Mustangs finished three strokes back of McKeiver. Sheldon Pryce and Riley Mathieson shot even-par 71. Other Mustangs in the field included Jordan Lemoire, 75 (+4); Nate Yoo, 77 (+6); and Ethan Mitchell, 83 (+12). As a team, the Mustangs finished T3 with Laurier Golden Hawks at 294, 11 strokes back of Brock. Laurentian Voyageurs finished second, seven back of Brock.
During the 2023 fall season, the Mustangs men, coached by Jim Waite, secured a spot in the 2024 Canadian University/College national championship with a second-place team finish at the 2023 OUA Golf Championship. At the national tournament at Sudbury’s Idylwylde G&CC, they missed the cut for the championship rounds.
Two Laurier Rams golfers finished 1-2 in women’s play yesterday at Guelph. Kristin Godkin posted a 69, five shots better than Vanessa Lin.
Kira Turner (London H&CC) of London was the top Mustangs finisher with a round of 78, good for sixth spot. Turner was the winner of Golf Ontario’s 2023 Christine Fisher Memorial Student Award.
Other Western women finishers included Hadley McHenry, 88; Mia Keselman, 107; and Morgan Fell, 111. As a team, the Mustangs finished seventh. Laurier finished on top at 226, with Toronto Varsity Blues second at 10 strokes back and Guelph third at 11 strokes back of Laurier.
The Mustangs now prepare for their annual Western Invitational on Monday at St. Thomas G&CC. LondonOntarioGolf.com will in Union covering the tournament.
