Laurier Golden Hawks men and University of Toronto Varsity Blues women captured first place at yesterday’s Western Invitational at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club.

Western men finished fourth, just six strokes behind Laurier in a tightly-contested tournament, while the Mustangs’ B team finished 11th amongst 12 competing squads from 11 Ontario universities.

In women’s competition, the Mustangs finished seventh amongst 10 schools with a team score of 278, 34 strokes behind U. of T.

In total, there were 98 golfers competing at Union, home course of Mustangs men’s head coach Jim Waite. Holding those reigns since 1991, Waite is one of the longest-running varsity coaches of any U Sports program.

The men’s competition saw the top six teams just 12 strokes apart. Taking top individual honours were Laurier’s Matt Whitehead and Nathan Proctor, and U. Windsor’s Alex Mauro who all shot even-par 72 at the 6,782-yard Stanley Thompson-designed course.

Londoner Liam McKeiver (Highland CC) helped Brock U. finish second with his fourth-place score of 1-over 73, tied with Ben Fowke of Laurentian U. McKeiver captured the Ontario university Fall Opener on Sept. 13 at Guelph Lakes Golf Club. He’s a former Junior Tyson Tour champion, and son of Highland PGA of Canada pro Katy McKeiver.

First-year Mustang Jordan LeMoire of Peterborough (Kawartha G&CC) – a former U. Ottawa Gee-Gees golfer – was Western’s top finisher at T6 with a score of 2-over 74. Four other golfers tied LeMoire.

Three women tied for first at 4-over 76: Anna Foley (U. Guelph), Kristi Godkin (Laurier) and Abigail Dove (Toronto Metropolitan U.). Godkin tied for top spot at Guelph.

Mustangs rookie Alexandra Kittel of Etobicoke (Lambton G&CC) was Western’s top finisher at 16-over 88. Laurier captured team silver, and Guelph bronze.
