January 31, 2023 (London, ONT) – LondonOntarioGolf.com (est. 2004), The Voice of Golf in Southwestern Ontario, announces that long-time Sunningdale Golf and Country Club golf superintendent Tim Webb is the winner of the 2023 London Ontario Golf Heart Award.
Webb, 59, is the 13th winner of the Heart Award, established by LondonOntarioGolf.com publisher and editor Jeffrey Reed in 2011. The award recognizes members of the Southwestern Ontario golf community who have unselfishly given back to golf while growing the game. The winner, as selected by the Heart Award committee, is chosen from within the categories of golf professionals/instructors, golf mentors, golf course owners/operators, golf course architects/designers, turf management professionals and members of the media.
Webb, who has held his current title since 1987, is the first golf course superintendent to win the Heart Award. He began his career at age 13 cleaning clubs in the back shop of Fanshawe Golf Club, and since then has worked passionately to not only perfect his craft, but also to work as a mentor for hundreds of turf maintenance crew members at Sunningdale and at numerous Southwestern Ontario golf clubs over the past 36 years.
“During his tenure as course superintendent, Tim has accomplished much, including the continuation and progression of two championship golf courses, countless course renovations, rebuilt greens and even the development of six newly-designed Doug Carrick golf holes,” said Sunningdale. “His wealth of knowledge for agronomy has kept Sunningdale’s property vibrant and lush for decades.

“But more than this, Tim is an excellent individual. He is honest, hardworking and has a genuine care for others and their daily work experience. With every interaction, Tim keeps it lighthearted and has an unbelievable knack to make the most difficult conversations and topics enjoyable. He is always there for his team, in good times and bad, and is a great role model for many in the industry.”
Reed said, “I’ve known Tim since we played many rounds together as junior members of Fanshawe Golf Club. He’s the same person today – genuine, caring and always professional. He has dedicated his entire life to the golf industry, and to helping others who aspire to do the same. LondonOntarioGolf.com is proud to honour Tim as this year’s Heart Award winner.”
Webb obtained his Turf Management apprenticeship at Fanshawe Golf Club via Humber College in Toronto, and graduated with a Turfgrass diploma from the University of Guelph. He is a member of the Ontario Golf Superintendents’ Association (OGSA), Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and Greater London & Area Golf Superintendents (GLAG).
OGSA board director Kevin Collier, golf superintendent at London’s RiverBend Golf Community, said Webb is a “staple of the local golf industry. Tim has definitely been a mentor to me, and one of the first to reach out to me when I took on my current role. I know he has done the same with others, too.” Collier added, Webb has been “an amazing source of support to both my career and the club. More importantly, he is also a great person.”
Webb and his wife, Lynn, have two children: son Brandon, 30; and daughter Kaitlyn, 28. When he’s not working out on the course at Sunningdale, he volunteers his time as a volunteer firefighter with the Middlesex Arva fire station.
“I am honoured and delighted to win the Heart Award this year,” said Webb. “Above all else, it is great to see the golf course superintendent’s side of things recognized as providing a significant contribution to the golf industry. The job itself is so rewarding, and you become part of the community.”
Webb will be presented with the Heart Award later this winter, venue and details to follow. A feature story on Tim Webb’s golf career is available at https://londonontariosports.com/category/golf/.
